Range Life Entertainment presents 10 energetic and irreverent independent comedies that have been turning heads and generating cult audiences at festivals across the country (Sundance, Slamdance, SXSW, and CineVegas to name a few). Following their strong festival runs, these filmmakers opted to take charge, and are now at the forefront of an emerging trend in distribution; traversing the nation by van this fall and engaging in grassroots marketing and on-line promotion to bring their films directly to their audiences. As filmmaker and tour organizer Todd Sklar says, "It's all about getting these films out there and connecting with people. Everything else is white noise." So tune it out altogether and join us for a week of festival favorites and curated after-parties at the Downtown Independent.

<<<<< Anywhere, USA >>>>>
Monday, October 19th, 7:00pm
"ANYWHERE, USA reduces every audience it sees into a delighted giggling mob. They did this movie out of love -- love for the weird. love for the unsayable idea. love for the privilege of movie making. It reminds one of the joy of sitting in an audience of strangers while everyone laughs hysterically." -- Quentin Tarantino
Told in three subtly related segments (Penance, Loss, and Ignorance), ANYWHERE USA is a du jour portrait of one man’s America inspired by and drawn from the director’s own experiences as both foreigner and citizen of these United States. Featuring a cast of mostly non-professionals and exploring passive racism, geo-political vagaries, good intentions, faith and disappointment, this deeply personal film manages to tread the lines between vulgar and humane, between absurd and tender, and finds its heart in the story segment featuring the director’s own daughter and a man living in a van. Part satire, part tragedy, part masterpiece theatre gone awry, ANYWHERE USA is a film that defies gravity.

"A film so dedicated to hallucinatory goofiness almost seems in and of itself to be unjustifiable, at least at first glance; in the end, this winking boast of misdirection has a neat symmetry with the games played by movie's narrative."
-- Karina Longworth, SpoutBlog.
IMPOLEX tells the story of Tyrone S., a United States soldier in Operation Paperclip, the mission to locate and retrieve German rockets and rocket science after the end of World War II. Tyrone is tasked with finding what he believes are the last V-2’s. Lost in the woods of an undefined European country, people from Tyrone’s past begin to appear in unusual ways, bearing strange tidings. A loved one he abandoned for the war is especially prominent in Tyrone’s journey, as is a fellow soldier and a mysterious man with tidings of the present and the future that are not yet known to Tyrone.
IMPOLEX is an unjustifiable blend of the bare bones realism of John Ford’s WWII documentaries and the glorious stupidity of Abbot and Costello.

" **** ... a great, funny and surprisingly moving film that's not to be missed"
-Don R. Lewis, FILM THREAT
Fanatical birdwatchers have descended upon a small town in the Arkansas bayou in hopes of finding the celebrated Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Declared extinct in the 1940’s, the bird has apparently been spotted by numerous experts. Enter amateur birder and poet Johnny Neander, who has convinced his taciturn sidekick that he will be the one to find the elusive woodpecker. The ensuing chaos divides the small town between believers and non-believers, rabid environmentalists and opportunistic entrepreneurs. Much like the bird itself, Woodpecker explores the intersection of fact and fiction, manipulating our notions of documentary and narrative techniques within a tragic comedy about hope, perception, and some very very strange birds.

"A revelation, THE GUATEMALAN HANDSHAKE holds a place in my heart that is normally reserved for Easter candy"
-Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre)
In the confusion following a massive power outage, an awkward demolition derby driver vanishes, setting in motion a series of events affecting his pregnant girlfriend, his helplessly car-less father, a pack of wild boy scouts, a lactose intolerant roller rink employee, an elderly woman in search of her lost dog, and his best friend –a ten-year-old girl named Turkeylegs. Pieces of the mystery begin to come together as Turkeylegs sets out to find her missing friend. Cars drive circles in the dirt, a woman attends her own funeral, the sun rises sideways and a bizarre orange vehicle trades hands again and again. Everything culminates in a massive demolition derby that throws all of the characters into different directions

"A hilarious pseudo-absurdist commentary on corporate politics and the fatuous American dream." -- Eric Snider
The Jeffers Corporation is the largest business in the history of mankind, and they got that way thanks to their strict philosophy of happiness through mindless productivity. But when people begin literally exploding due to unhappiness, Jeffers Corporation Level Three TUNT George Washington Winsterhammerman begins to fear that his time will come sooner rather than later.
George lives a comfortable yet completely uneventful life, and when he starts having dreams in which he’s the first president of the United States, his doctor informs him that they could be signs of impending explosion. Later, as the dreams become more frequent and his co-workers continue to detonate, George is prompted to reevaluate his mundane existence. As George’s life slowly descends into chaos, his dreams intensify, and he becomes increasingly involved with a mysterious woman from work. With the threat of explosion looming, George must choose to continue living the life he knows, or to break free in the hope of achieving a more fulfilling existence.

<<<<< Happy Birthday, Harris Malden >>>>>
Thursday, October 22nd, 9:00pm
"****.... really funny"
-- Don Lewis, FILM THREAT
Harris Malden is the neighborhood darling, but he has an idiosyncrasy: he tries to pass off his facial hair as real to his friends and family. The mustache is a big bold lie affixed right above his lip and it isn't fooling anyone but himself. The small community that shelters Harris supports his curious habit. Despite the big ol' fake mustache, everything is fine and dandy -- until his twenty-fifth birthday. His best friend Paul brings an outsider to Harris' party and their lives take a detour after she shouts, "YOU FAKE YOUR MUSTACHE!" just as he's blowing out the candles. The whole gang has to to deal with the repercussions of Harris' breakdown in this quirky comedy.

"Bruce Willis is hilariously intense. Think Rushmore meets The Usual Suspects" - MTV News
High School. Four of the most important years of your life. But it isn't always dances and keg parties and sucking face in your parents' mini-van. Sometimes it's ugly and hard and complicated. As complicated as a conspiracy to overthrow the president
There's something rotten at St. Donovans High and sophomore newspaper reporter Bobby Funke (Reece Thompson) is on it like pink rubber bands on your little sisters braces. When senior hottie Francesca Facchini (Mischa Barton) solicits Funkes help tracking down a set of stolen SATs, Funke uncovers a story dirtier than the lunch ladys moustache. After he fingers the school president (figuratively) for the crime, Funke becomes one of the most popular kids at St. Donovan's High. No longer known simply as the freshman who was once tied to a giant snowman penis, Funke wins the respect of everyone from the Desert-Storm-hero-turned-educator Principal Kirkpatrick (Bruce Willis) to the kid that farts on him in Spanish class. When Francesca takes Funke to homecoming, even the in-school suspension delinquents turn nice and offer guidance on how to keep his boner in check during slow dances.

"Disarmingly smart." -- Indiewire
Outrageous but true, LAST CUP: ROAD TO THE WORLD SERIES OF BEER PONG chronicles America’s wooziest subculture and follows participants as they compete to conquer the fun and frothy sport of competitive beer pong. Beer pong practitioners from across the US meet in Nevada for the second annual World Series of Beer Pong where the team with the sharpest accuracy (and highest tolerance) stands to walk away with $20,000. LAST CUP cuts through the drunken revelry and sets its cameras on four very different teams, culminating in a sobering, nail-biter of a conclusion.

Saturday, October 24th, 1:00pm
"Hilarious and heartwarming, WHITE ON RICE hits every comedic beat with surgical precision, while Hiroshi Watanabe masterfully walks the fine line between court jester and village idiot."
-- Michael Tully
A genuinely funny fish out of water tale, WHITE ON RICE follows Jimmy, who loves dinosaurs and sleeps on the top bunk. Unfortunately, Jimmy is 40 and shares that bunk with Bob his 10-year-old nephew. Freshly divorced and living with his sister and her family, Jimmy boldly searches for a new life, and although he lacks social grace and is prone to accidents, he's more than convinced that the best years of his life are just beginning. He just needs a little direction. When his sister's beautiful niece Ramona moves in, Jimmy finally has something to focus on; stealing her from his best friend Tim, however his intentions go hilariously awry.

"Plays like a cross between Richard Linkater's Slacker and TV's Seinfeld" -- Time Out Chicago
At once painfully hilarious and delicately poignant, the film follows four best friends through their last years of college. Dependant on their parents financially, and on each other emotionally, they spend their time sleeping in, hanging out, and eating lots of sandwiches. Using break-ups and re-occurring scholastic failures to impose a quarter-life crisis, they take turns postponing responsibility, avoiding accountability, and looking for someone or something to substantiate their lives, all the while hedging their bets and mastering the art of treading water and getting away with it.
Shot locally in Columbia, MO on a shoe-string budget, Sklar's debut feature is a collegiate love letter that not only paints an honest portrait of it's subject matter, but also evokes the nostalgic yearning the film's character's revel in.
